Located on the Baotuquan Campus of Shandong University in the downtown area of Jinan, the School of Medicine enjoys convenient transportation with Qianfoshan Mountain to the south, Baotuquan Spring to the north and other scenic spots including Daminghu Lake and Heihuquan Spring in its adjacent areas. Covering an area of 420,000 square meters, this beautiful campus has distinctive architectures which are mainly the preserved complex of Qilu University. With German, British and American styles, and adopting the building methods and symbols for traditional Chinese residential buildings, the architectures on Baotuquan Campus form a grand and distinctive architectural cluster in grand scale and of great magnificence. As the important historical heritages and representative architectures of modern China, these buildings were selected as the national key cultural relics in protection in the seventh batch. The roads and lanes on the campus are lined with trees, flowers and other plants, and its main roads are named after the trees planted on road sides. The central garden surrounded by the complex gathers the beauty of all seasons ever seen on the campus. Lao She (Shu Qingchun) once teaching in Qilu University described the campus as an "informal park."
This simple and elegant campus boasts a time-honored history. The School of Medicine can be traced back to the Medical School of Qilu University. As the main part of the Shandong Medical University, it is a school with the longest history in Shandong University. Being the inheritor of medical education of Qilu University, the origin of this school dates back to Dengzhou College founded in 1864. In 1911, the the main building Ji’nan Union Medical College was put into use, marking the starting point of higher medical education of Shandong University. In 1952, Medical School of Qilu University, Shandong Provincial Medical College and Norman Bethune Medical College of East China were merged to establish Shandong Medical College. Under the direct administration of the Ministry of Health in 1978, this college was renamed as Shandong Medical University in 1985. In July 2000, the original Shandong University, Shandong Medical University, and Shandong University of Technology were integrated to form a new Shandong University seen nowadays. In January 2001, Medical School was formed by the combination of Basic Medical School and the Department of Clinical Medicine, becoming the largest school of Shandong University. In May 2012, the Qilu Medical College of Shandong University was established with the Medical School as its subordinate. In order to promote the reform of the management system in medical education, the Medical School was divided into School of Basic Medical Sciences and School of medicine In June 2016.
The school gathers a large number of well-known experts and scholars at home and abroad. Besides, it has many famous teachers, outstanding academic leaders and members with doctorate degrees in youth and middle age. Among them, 252 are professors, 101 associate professors, 187 doctoral tutors and 598 master tutors. Especially, there are 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 3 members of the National Ten Thousand Talent Project at the first and second level, 1 young scholar once obtaining the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 members of the "Mountain Taishan Scholar Climbing Plan" in Shandong Province, 15 distinguished professors (experts) appointed as the "Mountain Taishan Scholar" of Shandong Province, and 2 members of the "Excellent Talent Support Program for the New Century" of the Ministry of Education.
There are more than 4,500 full-time students in the school, of which more than 1,300 students in lower grades are educated in School of Basic Medical Sciences. Among the rest students educated in our school, there are nearly 1600 undergraduates in five-year medical education and master-candidate students without . Besides, there are nearly 1,600 master and doctoral students. In terms of clinical education for undergraduates, the school has three majors including Clinical Medicine (5-year), Clinical Medicine (5+3 years) and Clinical Medicine (5+3 years in Excellent Qilu Medical Students Program), among which clinical medicine (5-year) is a traditional advantageous one. This major, open to public in 1952, was selected as Outstanding Doctor Education Program Pilot by the MOE and MOH at the first batch. The school enrolls graduate students participating in national or independent graduate admission examination, recommended undergraduates of some key universities, students in successive postgraduate and doctoral programs of study, PhD students participating in national admission examination, clinicians participating in national examination held by the national health commission and the candidates in job who apply for a doctorate degree in academic ability. Under the guidance of generations of famous teachers, the major has cultivated more than 40,000 outstanding medical workers for our country, and has become an important center of medical education in China.
In terms of the discipline-building of the first-class, the Clinical Medicine, a traditional advantageous major of the school, was listed as the featured major in higher education by the MOE in its first batch of selection. The school currently boasts 2 key disciplines at national level, 6 key disciplines at the provincial level, 1 engineering research center at national level, 1 key laboratory at the provincial level, 1 key laboratory in higher education institutes at the provincial level, 1 discipline authorized to offer doctorate degree at first-grade, 8 disciplines authorized to offer doctorate degree at second-grade, 18 discipline authorized to offer master degree at second-grade and a center for post-doctoral studies. The latest ESI shows that the academic capability and influence of the clinical medicine of Shandong University has entered the top 1% of the world.
As to talent education, upholding the vision of cultivating medical talents with superb skills, noble morality, social responsibility and international horizon and adhering to the principles of combining theory with practice, conducting clinical practice at an early stage and improving the students' clinical capabilities, the school has been exploring application-oriented talent cultivating models that meet the need of social development. Various culture activities have been launched by the Party Branches of the CPC, Branches of China Communist Youth League, the Student Union and associations to improve students' culture awareness and quality. In practice teaching, the school boasts several influential teaching hospitals to improve its scientific research and talent education with Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, Second Hospital of Shandong University, Reproductive Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University as the attached hospitals under the direct management of Shandong University, Shandong Provincial Hospital, Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital, Jinan Central Hospital, Shandong Cancer Hospital as other attached hospitals. In addition, it has some teaching hospitals including Mental Health Center of Shandong Province, Shandong Medical Imaging Institute, Infectious Disease Hospital of Jinan, and Dermatology Research Institute of Shandong Province.
Conducting substantive exchanges and cooperation with medical schools of high-level at home and abroad i an active manner, the school has established partnership with world-leading medical institutes such as Medical School of University of Toronto, Nebraska Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine of the US. Cooperative projects such as the co-construction of laboratories, mutual visits of teaching and research personnel, joint cultivation of graduate students, academic visits of undergraduates, and joint application for relevant research have been performed. Some outstanding students are sent to these institutes for scientific research , clinical training or academic exchange every year.
